Understanding drayage in Vancouver

Port terminals

Drayage at the Port of Vancouver, Explained

The Port of Vancouver is Canada's largest and busiest gateway, and its container terminals run from the Roberts Bank causeway in Delta to the working waterfront of Burrard Inlet. Which terminal your box lands at sets the drive, the gate procedure, and the queue — the terminals don't share a system.

Deltaport

Roberts Bank, Delta — the port’s largest terminal, on-dock rail, longest truck queues at peak season.

Vanterm

Inner harbour, east side — close to Commissioner Street and CN's Thornton lead.

Centerm

Downtown waterfront by CRAB Park — smallest footprint, strict truck reservation windows.

Deltaport is an hour from the Fraser Valley warehouses in light traffic and much longer at shift change; Vanterm and Centerm put a driver into East Vancouver street traffic instead. A quote built for the wrong terminal is usually wrong on both price and timing.

Name the exact terminal — Deltaport, Vanterm, or Centerm — plus your Lower Mainland delivery city. Reservation systems and gate hours differ enough that carriers price each terminal as its own lane.

Rail connection

The Rail Half of Vancouver Drayage

A large share of everything that lands in Vancouver leaves the Lower Mainland by train, not by truck. Deltaport builds trains on-dock at Roberts Bank; the rest of the volume moves to CN or CP inland ramps. Local carriers often quote that rail-ramp leg separately from a port-to-door move.

CN Thornton Yard

Surrey — CN's main Lower Mainland classification and intermodal yard, fed off the Fraser River bridge.

CP Vancouver Intermodal

Pitt Meadows — CP's ramp on the north side of the Fraser, east of Coquitlam.

Roberts Bank on-dock rail

Deltaport loads railcars inside the terminal, so a slice of West Coast volume skips a truck leg entirely.

Thornton in Surrey and the Pitt Meadows ramp are on opposite sides of the Fraser, so “the rail move” can mean two very different drives depending on which railway has your container.

If your freight is going inland, ask which railway and which ramp before comparing quotes — a drop to Thornton and a drop to Pitt Meadows are not interchangeable.

How It Works in Vancouver

Three steps to go from searching the directory to a quote in your inbox.

01

Find Terminal-Specific Carriers

Search for companies serving Deltaport, Vanterm, or Centerm, plus onward CN and CP rail connections. Canada's busiest port means terminal choice matters for pricing and turnaround.

02

Compare Verified Vancouver Profiles

Every company is reviewed before listing. Compare which terminals each carrier covers and how they handle congestion and chassis availability.

03

Send a Quote Request

Specify the exact terminal and delivery distance within the Lower Mainland when you reach out. It's free to contact carriers directly through their profile.
